The Ultimate Guide to Packing for a Cross-Country Move

A cross-country move is fundamentally different from a local move. Your belongings will be on a vehicle for hours, potentially overnight, and handled more times. Packing well isn't just about organisation — it's about protecting your items for a longer, more demanding journey.

Invest in Better Materials

For a long-distance move, use double-walled boxes throughout — not the single-walled boxes that are fine for a local move. The extra rigidity matters when boxes are stacked and loaded for hours. Buy more bubble wrap than you think you need.

Pack Heavier Items at the Bottom

This applies to all moves but is critical for long-distance. Heavy items at the bottom of boxes, lighter items on top. Heavy boxes at the floor of the van, lighter boxes stacked above. Items will shift during a long journey — weight distribution matters.

Double-Wrap All Fragiles

For a local move, single wrapping is often sufficient. For cross-country, double-wrap fragile items — wrap in packing paper first, then in bubble wrap. Fill every gap in the box with scrunched paper. Fragiles should not be able to move at all inside the box.

Label Everything in Detail

Label every box with: destination room, brief contents, fragile status, and which way up. Use a consistent colour coding system by room. The more detail on the label, the faster unloading goes at the other end.

Keep Essentials Accessible

Pack a separate bag (not a box) with everything you'll need for 24–48 hours: clothes, toiletries, phone charger, important documents, medication, kettle and mugs, toilet paper. This bag travels in your car, not the removal van.
