How to Pack Your Kitchen for a House Move
Start With What You Use Least
Begin packing items you rarely use — special occasion crockery, seasonal gadgets and extra cookware.
Wrap Plates Vertically
Pack plates on their edge like records, not flat. This distributes weight better and reduces breakage.
Use Clothing to Wrap Fragile Items
Tea towels, oven gloves and clothing make excellent padding for glasses and mugs — and it saves on bubble wrap.
Empty and Clean Appliances
Defrost the freezer at least 24 hours before moving day. Clean out the fridge and secure any loose parts on appliances.
Label Fragile Boxes Clearly
Mark any box containing fragile items on all sides, not just the top.
Use Small Boxes for Heavy Items
Crockery and pots are heavy. Use smaller boxes so they're still manageable to lift.
Dispose of Perishables
Use up or donate food in the weeks before your move. Only transport sealed, non-perishable items.
