How to Pack a Kitchen for Moving: The Complete Guide
The kitchen is consistently the most time-consuming room to pack — and the most likely source of breakages. Here's how to approach it systematically.
What You'll Need
- Double-walled boxes (essential for heavy items)
- Plenty of bubble wrap and packing paper
- Cell dividers for glasses
- Marker pen for labelling
- A separate bag for items you'll need until moving day
Start with What You Use Least
Pack in reverse order of use. Start with rarely-used appliances (bread maker, food processor), then seasonal items, then crockery and glassware, leaving everyday essentials until last.
Packing Glassware and Crockery
Wrap each glass individually in packing paper. Place glasses upright in boxes lined with bubble wrap — never stack them on their sides. Pack plates vertically (like records) with packing paper between each one — this dramatically reduces breakage risk.
Packing Appliances
Original boxes are ideal for appliances. If you don't have them, wrap appliances in bubble wrap and fill any gaps in the box with scrunched paper. Always remove and separately pack any detachable parts.
The Fridge and Freezer
Defrost your freezer at least 24 hours before moving day. Clean and dry both thoroughly. Pack any remaining frozen food in cool bags for the journey. Transport fridge-freezers upright where possible.
Labelling
Label every kitchen box with its contents and FRAGILE where appropriate. Mark which boxes should be unpacked first (everyday essentials) so you can make a cup of tea on day one.
